Get the alternator checked with a Multimeter - at 20V setting, the multimeter should read between 13 to 14v on the terminals with engine running, if OK this would rule out any issues with the alternator. If everything else is Ok and the issue is the heavy steering only without power, and the battery light is on in the cluster, I would suspect
Slacken the mounting bolts on the alternator to remove the belt. On refitting, move the alternator back to its previous position to take the slack from the belt. Manually check the tension using this method: applying firm thumb pressure there should be approx. 5 mm of free movement at the mid-point between the pulleys.
I do a lot of stop/start due to work, wouldn't be helping the problem I know, but basically this has happened for the 3rd time in 4 days now. Went to start the car, electronics come on (MAR) and I wait till all the lights go off, turn the key to on then everything just dies, not even the clock

The easiest method to check the alternator is by measuring the voltage at the battery terminals when the engine is running. Start your Punto. Connect the black cable of the multimeter to negative terminal of the battery, and the red cable to the positive terminal. The voltage should be between 13.5 and 14.8 volts with the engine running.
I have a 2006 GP Sport 1.9 Multijet 130. Last week the alternator broke down, the local dealer claims that he spend 3.5 hours on replacing this with a referb version. According to the Fiat repair lists this should be done within the hour :bang: Has anyone done this repair? Is it indeed over
Definitely check the battery to body and battery to engine straps. If there isn't a complete circuit from the alternator (live and earth) it won't charge The wires usually go at the non-Battery end if you read the problems people have had on the forum Though unfortunately Alternators do die too. What engine do you have?
